Omar is a Palestinian drama directed by Hany Abu-Assad. The title character is a young man living in a divided Palestine, trying to balance his personal life with his involvement in the resistance. By day Omar is a baker and is in a relationship with a girl named Nadia on the other side of the separation wall. But he lives another life as a freedom fighter and is captured one day after a resistance mission. The military police decide to use Omar as an informant to get at Nadia’s militant brother Tarek, dividing his feelings like the wall divides his city.

Omar is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Academy Awards. It is the second film by Abu-Assad to receive the honour following his 2006 Golden Globe winning film Paradise NowOmar also won the Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Omar is rated 14A.
