Oculus

Oculus is a horror film directed by Mike Flanagan. Adapted from Flanagan’s short film of the same name, the film follows two siblings, Kaylie and Tim, as they investigate the death of their parents years earlier. Kaylie believes that a mirror their parents had caused the tragedy, while Tim, after years of therapy, believes  the mirror had nothing to do with it. However, after digging deeper into the mirror’s past, the pair discover that the glass has a history of grisly deaths tied to it. The film stars Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, and Rory Cochrane.

Oculus received a positive reception after it premiered at last year’s TIFF Midnight Madness program, coming second in voting for the People’s Choice Award. Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites, who play the siblings Kaylie and Tim, are seeing their stars rise recently. Gillan starred in Doctor Who from 2010-2013, and can be seen later this year in Guardians of the Galaxy and The List. Thwaites can next be seen in this summer’s Maleficent, and is also starring in The Giver and The Signal, both due out later this year.

Oculus is rated 14A.
