Obvious Child is a romantic comedy film directed by Gillian Robespierre and based off of her 2009 short film. Jenny Slate stars as Donna, a young stand-up comedian living in New York City. After getting dumped by her boyfriend, she meets Max at a nightclub, has a one night stand and ends up pregnant. Through the help of her friends, family, and random hookup, Donna must confront the realities of womanhood and make a choice that will impact her life, and other’s lives, forever. The film co-stars Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffmann, David Cross, and Richard Kind.

Writer/director Gillian Robespierre turned to Kickstarter to help transform her acclaimed short into a feature length film. On the project’s page she describes the motivation she had to expand on the short. “We were frustrated by the limited representations of young women’s experience with pregnancy, let alone growing up. We were waiting to see a more honest film, or at least, a story that was closer to many of the stories we knew. We weren’t sure how long that wait was going to be, so we decided to tell the story ourselves. When we shared it on the Internet it was really exciting to see that people were actually watching it. But what was even cooler were the conversations the movie ignited. That truly encouraged and inspired me to expand to feature-length, to share this film and these conversations with even more people around the world.”
