Oakville Transit strike averted

A last-minute tentative agreement has been reached to avert a strike at Oakville Transit.

The deal was reached around midnight Wednesday, just hours before the 2 a.m. deadline that would have seen drivers and maintenance workers walk off the job.

Unifor Local 1256, which represents those workers, says the agreement covers a four-year term and addresses their core issues.

“These were difficult negotiations but the issue of respect and fair recognition for quality work was something our Unifor made a priority to fight for,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.

“I want to congratulate the bargaining committee for their work to defend the core principle of decent work and fairness and for seeking to ensure the public was not disrupted.”

Members will vote on the deal on Sunday.
