Oakville nurse charged with criminal negligence

A nurse who worked in a long-term care facility in Oakville earlier this year is charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Halton Police say registered practical nurse Diana Franchi, 37, performed an authorized medical procedure in February. They won’t specify what the procedure was; but they say even though it was allowed, she did it in a way that was negligent and resulted in bodily harm beyond what was expected.

The man who was the patient did not suffer fatal injuries.

Franchi worked at the Northridge Long Term Care Centre in Oakville. All the facility’s executive director would say is that Franchi is no longer an employee. The Service Employees International Union represents nurses at the home. It says Franchi hasn’t been working at Northridge or as a member of the union since she was let go early in the year.

It was the SEIU’s impression that Franchi was fired, and then Northridge contacted police. However the union says it has not spoken with Franchi, and it does not have enough information to take a position on the matter. He did say though that she is still authorized to practice nursing according to the College of Nurses of Ontario.

The College did not respond to an interview request today.

Franchi has a court date on December 11.
