Oakville is the latest municipality from around the world to pass a by law banning shark fin products, making it illegal for anyone in Oakville to possess or sell shark fins.

Hawaii’s government was the first in the world to ban shark fins.

Animal rights activists called for the ban to prevent over-fishing of sharks in the Pacific and to prevent extinction.

Toronto, Brantford and Mississauga have already banned shark fins in their communities.

Shark fins are served as a popular soup at some Chinese restaurants.
