Norfolk County senior defrauded $9.5K in telephone scam

A Norfolk County senior was scammed out of $9,450 from an unknown man claiming to be a lawyer representing a loved one on Nov. 22.

The Norfolk resident received a phone call from an unknown suspect – they were told that their son in law was injured and in trouble after being arrested.

The victim was also told that a number of pills had been found and that money was required for bail to release their family member from jail.

Following the phone call, the victim visited their local bank to withdraw cash to meet with the man at a parking lot of the LCBO on Highway 59 in Langton at around 4 p.m. on Nov. 22.

The suspect was described to the police as having a clean haircut with no facial hair.

The victim realized that it was a scam after speaking to relatives, which he then immediately called police.

Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate and ask community members that live on Highway 59 near the LCBO to check their surveillance cameras, and see if they captured the suspect or vehicle involved in the scam.

Police ask anyone with information concerning this incident to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
