No one was seriously injured after strong winds caused a group of catamarans to capsize in Lake Ontario off of Spencer Smith Park in Burlington over the weekend.

Police say multiple boats capsized just after 2:30pm when a storm passed through the area sending three people into the water. Both Hamilton and Halton Police marine units along with the Oakville and Hamilton Coast Guard Auxiliary Units attended. Peel Police marine unit also assisted.

Police say the catamarans were about 500-600 metres offshore when they overturned. Everyone was wearing a life-jacket. At the time the boats capsized, Hamilton and Burlington were under a severe thunderstorm watch. Environment Canada later ended the watch just after 5pm.

Environment Canada warns boaters that summer thunderstorms can hit quickly and often without warning. If the sky begins to darken and clouds begin to build rapidly, boaters are urged to head back to shore.

Police and Environment Canada urge boaters to also check the latest weather forecast before heading out onto the water.
