No one injured in suspicious multiple-alarm east Hamilton fire

Authorities say no one was injured during a suspicious multi-alarm fire that happened early Wednesday morning in Hamilton’s east end.
Crews responded to a call at 1540 Barton St. East shortly before 1:30 a.m. and reported heavy fire and smoke, which appeared to be coming from the basement of the multi-occupancy residence.
More crews were brought in after it was upgraded to a multiple alarm fire due to the possibility of numerous occupants.
The basement fire was quickly put out and the cause has not yet been determined.
The property was cleared after a search was completed, downgrading the multiple alarm back to a first alarm.
The estimated cost of damages is $250,000.
Police are investigating and believe the fire is suspicious. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
