Ontario’s police watchdog says there are no grounds to charge officers who were in the home of Regis Korchinski-Paquet when she fell to her death from a Toronto balcony.

The Special Investigations Unit says there were six officers in the 29-year-old woman’s home in May.

In a report released Wednesday afternoon, SIU Director Tony Loparco says there’s no evidence the officers committed a crime.

“The evidence indicates that no one other than Ms. Korchinski-Paquet was on the balcony when she scaled over the railing and attempted to sidestep along the outer ledge over to her neighbour’s balcony, lost her balance, and fell,” said the report.

Korchinski-Paquet’s death sparked protests in the city and the province.

It also prompted continued calls to change the way police deal with people in mental health crisis.
