The Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) has officially opened Niagara’s first community fridge.

The fridge is located in the gazebo on the front lawn of the animal shelter on 4th Ave. in St. Catharines.

It will be open to members of the public who are in need from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The building also features a pantry that includes produce, dry goods, commercially prepared foods, canned products, and non-food items, such as personal care and hygiene products.

“We are in a fortunate position, based on our location and layout to be able to better help and serve our community,” said Executive Director Kevin Strooband in a news release. “Animals and people are fundamentally linked and as the LCHS is a committed organization concerned with all vulnerable members of our community, helping people in need, within our compassionate city, is a natural thing to do.”

LCHS says it is always looking for donations of non-expired food items for the fridge. The agency says whatever items you place on your table is “what we need on ours.”

The humane society partnered with Community Care of St. Catharines & Thorold on the project and funding for fridge and room construction was provided by the St. Catharines Rotary Club, Grantham Lions Club, Garden City Lions Club, and the St. David’s Lions Club.
