Niagara Region adding new Community Safety Zones at ten schools

Niagara Region is adding ten new Community Safety Zones at schools located on regional roads just in time for the new school year.

The schools are located in the communities of  Fort Erie, Grimsby, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Welland, and West Lincoln.

According to the Niagara Region, Community Safety Zones help improve safety for those travelling to and from school by reducing speed and distracted driving.

The penalties for traffic violations are doubled in these zones.

The region says enforcement will begin the week of Sept. 21, after the education and awareness week is complete.

The education week will be led by the staff and the Niagara Regional Police from Sept. 8 to Sept. 20.

Last year, Niagara Region launched its first Community Safety Zones at two schools located on regional roads with the hopes of adding more.

Community Safety Zone locations:

• John Calvin School, Station St. (Regional Rd. 14) between Spring Creek Rd. and West St. in West Lincoln
• Smithville District Christian High School, Townline Rd. (Regional Rd. 14) between Harvest Gate and Canborough St. in West Lincoln
• Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School, Livingston Ave. (Regional Rd. 514) between Roberts Rd. and Patton St. in Grimsby
• Greendale Elementary School, Montrose Rd. (Regional Rd. 98) between Watson St. and Lundy’s Ln. in Niagara Falls
• Our Lady of Victory Catholic Elementary School, Central Ave. (Regional Rd. 124) between Gilmore Rd. and Bertie St. in Fort Erie
• Park Elementary School, Main St. E. (Regional Rd. 81) between Nelles Rd. N/Nelles Rd. S and Barlett Ave. in Grimsby
• Crossroads Public Elementary School, Niagara Stone Rd. (Regional Rd. 55) between Concession 6 Rd. (roundabout) and Four Mile Creek Rd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake
• Alexander Kuska KSG Catholic Elementary School, Rice Rd. (Regional Rd. 54) between Quaker Rd. and Woodlawn Rd. in Welland
• DSBN Academy, Louth St. (Regional Rd. 72) between Rykert St. and Pelham Rd. in St. Catharines
• St. Ann Catholic Elementary School, Main St. (Regional Rd. 87) between Martindale Rd. and Johnson St. in St. Catharines
