Niagara police is warning members of the public about gift card scams.

Police say the victims receive emails or texts from scammers pretending to be someone they know and asking them to purchase gift cards.

Then the scammer asks the victims to scratch the back of the gift cards and send the information so the funds can be used without having the card itself.

Niagara police reminds everyone to be careful of anyone asking for gift cards, Bitcoin or anything unusual as a form of payment or financial assistance.

Anyone who is a victim of a scam and experienced financial loss is asked to contact police.

Anyone who received one these calls or messages but didn’t experience financial loss is asked to contact Phonebusters or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center.
