A 24-year-old St. Catharines man is facing charges after a woman was defrauded of $2,000 in a fake job scam.

Niagara police say a woman applied for a job online and was offered the position after a one-minute interview with the man.

A company representative then told her to buy computer equipment using money that the business would provide.

She received a digital photo of a cheque through an online banking app and was instructed to deposit it into her account.

Investigators say an overpayment was issued and she was asked to return the $2,000 by e-transfer. She sent the e-transfer, only to later learn from her bank that the cheque was fraudulent.

Niagara police arrested Sunday Kehinde on Thursday and charged him with fraud under $5,000 and laundering proceeds of crime.

Kehinde was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on Friday at a St. Catharines courthouse.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext.1022200.
