Niagara police have arrested and charged a 16-year-old boy in connection with several thefts of American licence plates from parked vehicles.

Investigators say the thefts have been taking place in parking lots of hotels located in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines since last month.

Police say they saw a young boy exit a car in a hotel parking lot on Fallsview Blvd. near Robinson St. on Wednesday.

Officers arrested the boy after he removed an American licence plate from a vehicle and tried to leave the scene.

Officers say the boy had multiple American licence plates at the time of his arrest.

Investigators also found 75 American and Canadian licence plates following the arrest and say the same suspect was responsible for a gas drive-off in Thorold earlier this month.

The teenager from Welland is facing charges for possession of property obtained by crime, attempt to commit an indictable offence and theft of gasoline under $5,000.

The suspect had a video bail hearing in a St. Catharines courthouse on Thursday.

Officers are continuing to investigate this case and ask anyone with information to contact them at 905-0688-4111, option 3, extension 1008391.
