Conservation groups in Niagara are worried about how much development is happening.

Like so many other places in Southern Ontario, green space and natural habitats in Niagara, are disappearing, making way for developments. And a local conservation group wants to save as much land as it can. The Niagara Land Trust is urging property owners who want to preserve the land for future generations to help them in their
fight. Lake Erie shoreline residents are concerned about some big, new projects along the waterfront.

Tim Seburn is with Niagara Land Trust: “if someone owns property that they would like to conserve, then they can join with us and work through us to conserve this land. The lakefront here in Fort Erie is particularly important because so much of Niagara’s ecological heritage that remains intact is here along the lake. And much of this property has been held by Americans who view this land as recreational for their families. And with the changeover in ownership to Canadian, many of these properties are being used for year-round residents and are being developed.”

At least one property owner has donated a conservation easement to the Niagara Land Trust. That means there’s a restriction on the title to ensure it’s not developed. If you’re interested in preserving land click on this link for Niagara Land Trust.

The group is holding an event called Botany & Birding on the Beach; click the name for details.
