Niagara-on-the-Lake remembers 9/11

13 Years after the 9/11 attacks, the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake still stops and remembers. A memorial service was held this morning in the old town.

The service began with the lowering of the Canadian and American flags at the exact time the first plane hit the World Trade Centre. Niagara-on-the-Lake residents gathered in front of the old town cenotaph to reflect and remember.

Although it was 13 years ago, people like Ross Robinson still have vivid memories of what it was like that day.

“I remember exactly. I was in the ‘O Canada Eh’ dinner show offices when it started to happen. We all thought that a plane hit a building looking for Newark airport, but then when a second plane hit we knew it was a serious serious attack.”

Janice Thomson of the NOTL Chamber of Commerce: “On that particular day our town was packed with people, with visitors and many Americans, and we will just never forget that.”

“We felt like it was our families who were coming and seeking information and wanting to use telephones so it was really something that just resonates with us.”

The town has a close bond with Americans. 40 per cent of their visitors are from the U.S.
