The training camp for the Niagara IceDogs kicked off this morning. The team finished dead last in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season.

The day kicked off with fitness testing before the players took the ice at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

There will be a new coach behind the bench this season after the team’s former minority owners who also served as general manager, and the head coach was suspended and fined $150,000 for violating the OHL’s conduct policy. It’s alleged Joey and Billy Burke made offensive comments in the team’s group chat.

The team also has a new ownership group that includes Wayne Gretzky. With new ownership, new coaching staff, and many new players for many, it feels like a fresh start for this team.

The IceDogs kick off their preseason this Sunday in Kitchener.
