Niagara Falls is putting permanent measures in place to protect pedestrians from the threat of a vehicle attack. This after a deadly event in Toronto left 10 people dead and 16 others injured.

The barricade extends just over half a kilometre along the Falls. Niagara Parks has brought out this safety measure in the past, but its only been introduced for shorter duration of time. Now they’re saying they want something more permanent in place to protect visitors travelling to this incredibly busy tourist destination.

“We decided to have a longer period of time this year, so starting Friday April 27th, running through till Thanksgiving weekend we have the pedestrian promenade in place.” Niagara Parks.

The barricade is made up of connecting white pieces of plastic that have been filled with water and they’re built to withstand the impact of a vehicle. Crews have also placed heavy permanent benches along the sidewalk.

Niagara Parks is introducing another security measure but this one will be at the Journey Behind the Falls attraction. A new bag check program will be going into effect next Friday.
