Niagara facelift

A busy strip right in the heart of Niagara Falls’ tourist district is getting a much needed facelift. City council approved the first phase of a street-scape revitalization project along Victoria avenue.

The city will inject $3 million towards revitalizing the strip where more than 120 business operate. The Victoria Centre BIA plans to spend $600 000 towards the revitalization project. It’s a major money maker for the city, generating over $5 million in yearly-property taxes.

The makeover would include more accessible sidewalks, benches, landscaping, performance spaces and public washrooms. It would stretch 6 blocks between Highway 420 and Clark avenue and will be broken into 5 phases the first will begin this spring.

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says the timing couldn’t be better, “right now tourism is in a major way on the upswing.” Thanks to a lower loonie the city has come off the best tourism season in at least a decade.
