A $50 million class-action lawsuit has been filed against Niagara College.
Two former international students, Anish Goyal and Chintan Zankat, are taking legal action on behalf their classmates, after a mostly online program left them ineligible to work in Canada. The four-month program was allegedly promoted as a way to obtain a three year work permit.
Darcy Merkur, the lawyer representing Goyal and Zankat, says about 500 students are affected. According to Merkur, the program was so successful that Niagara College could no longer accommodate everyone, so they added an online component. The lawyer says the online component meant that the program crossed the line into “distance learning” territory, and the federal government started denying the permits.
Niagara College say it’s consulting with legal counsel and has no comment at this time.
