A magnitude-7.8 earthquake hits New Zealand’s South Island, killing at least two people, causing structural damage and prompting emergency services to evacuate coastline civilians to higher ground.

Reports say that the country has experienced aftershocks scoring as high as 6.2 on the Richter Scale. Citizens are warned to stay away from bodies of water due to risk of tsunamis.
