New union name after merger

The new name and logo for what will become Canada’s largest private sector union has been announced.
Last year, the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada voted for a merger. When the two officially unite, it will be called “Unifor”. The new union’s logo is a big white ‘u’ on a red shield. It will represent more than 300,000 workers across about 20 sectors of the economy. Most will be concentrated in manufacturing, communications and transportation. But the new union would also represent some public sector employees working in health, education and transit roles. CAW and CEP members voted to combine forces in hopes of revitalizing the union movement.
