A new trial for a man charged in the murder of his girlfriend will begin on November 2nd.
Tania Cowell, 36, was stabbed to death in March 2013 in her Stoney Creek apartment. She was on maternity leave at the time. Her common law partner Haiden Suarez-Noa surrendered to Police in Guelph a few hours after the killing, and has been in custody since.
He also handed over their 5 month old son who was unharmed and is now in the care of Cowell’s family.
The case was originally in court in June but the judge declared a mistrial after inflammatory comments. The Crown compared the accused murderer to an “animal” and mocked his defence strategy in the opening address.
Justice Robert Reid said he had no choice but to end the trial. It will resume in November with a new jury.
