New Toronto detention centre set to open

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services is offering tours of a new detention centre that is set to open at the end of the month.

Over 1,600 inmates will call the Toronto South Detention Centre home. They will be placed two to a cell, and the only fresh air comes in through windows in certain areas.

The facility doesn’t have a prison yard, and inmates will only see visitors through video, meaning no face-to-face contact. Most court appearances will also be done through video link.
