New security powers expected for Canada

It looks like Canada will gain some enhanced powers under a new perimeter security deal with the United States.

The deal will be announced Wednesday when Prime Minister Stephen Harper visits Washington.

It’s expected Canada will get more power to track unemployment insurance recipients who skip the country, as well as monitoring landed immigrants who don’t spend enough time in Canada.

The increased muscle is reported to come with a $1 billion price tag.

Some critics argue the deal poses a threat to Canadian sovereignty.
