CHCH was at the Elgin Theatre for the premiere of the new Jennifer Aniston film ‘Cake’. This film is seen as a drama with some comedic elements and it touches on some sensitive issues.

Aniston lit up the red carpet today as all eyes were on her.

She plays a woman who suffers from chronic pain and she also has driven away everyone who is close to her, She then becomes somewhat obsessed with the suicide of someone who was in her peer support group. That woman played by Anna Kendrick. And she actually pushes her way into Anna Kendrick’s former life.

She gets to know her former husband, played by Sam Worthington, and the movie deals with some sensitive topics like suicide, combined with the brash personality of Aniston’s character. So she could be very unlikable — somewhat unlike what Jennifer Aniston has done before.

So we asked the actress how she makes her character likable and somewhat funny?

Jennifer Aniston: “I don’t think about making them likable or not — I just think about playing them as real as they are. And there’s a lot of vulnerability to this woman and you see the journey and the agony that she’s going through and anybody would have empathy for that.”

We also spoke to the director Daniel Burnz and Sam Worthington about this very same topic — how do you support Aniston in a role that is a departure from what she normally plays and do you make sure it comes off well?

Sam Worthington: “She’s a likable person and the thing about this is Jennifer is trying something different. We have an idea of what we know about Jennifer because she’s in the magazines every single day. But being under that much scrutiny is very hard to create a character that is very different from what people expect of her and I wanted to help her support that.”

Director Daniel Burnz: “What Jennifer Aniston brings to this is something you ornately forgive. And I think over the course of the film as you really begin to understand who this character is any why she acts the way she does, you forgive her and really quite love her.”
