Hamilton Health Sciences unveiled a set of new operating rooms to replace the existing ones at McMaster University Medical Centre.

Doctors say the 8 new operating rooms are designed for today’s technology and surgical needs. Each room cost approximately $1.6 million to build and is part of the larger redevelopment of the centre.

The new rooms are roughly 20 to 25 per cent larger. The extra room will help accommodate for less invasive surgeries, like laparoscopic surgeries, which require additional equipment.

Dr Carolyn Best explains, “in the old operating rooms, the set-ups were extensive. Often large pieces of equipment were brought into the room that reduced the size that you could move around in the operating room with all the different healthcare workers.”

“It wasn’t an ergonomic set up, especially with what we are trying to do. These rooms, again they are larger. They provide more space for the surgical team to move around in and they are simply set up with state of the art equipment designed for our purposes.”

“We don’t have to move equipment in and out as much. It allows for things to be much more available to us.”

Over 1200 gynecological procedures were done at the medical centre last year alone. Doctors say many of those surgeries have moved into the direction of laparoscropic surgeries.
