It has been two weeks since Burlington teacher Neil Bantleman was sentenced to ten years in prison in Indonesia, but his family says they still haven’t heard from the Canadian government.
Bantleman was sentenced after judges in jakarta found he intentionally committed acts of assault and child sexual abuse of three kindergarten-aged children at the Jakarta International School. Bantleman has now written a letter to prime minister Stephen Harper saying the allegations are linked to a $125 million lawsuit against the school. He goes on to say, in part:
“As an upstanding Canadian citizen and educator, I am struggling to understand why the Canadian government has been so painfully reticent in speaking out about this gross miscarriage of justice and abuse of human rights.”
“If the government is truly for the people, by the people, and its purpose is to represent and uphold principles of democracy and human rights, then I wonder why the government remains silent. ”
He ends by saying: “prime minister Harper, I am pleading with you to speak out on my behalf.”
Meanwhile, the wife of Bantleman’s co-worker Ferdinant Tijong, who was also sentenced to ten years, has filed a police report. The report involves the three parents who claimed their children were sodomized, and three Indonesian doctors who made the medical exam reports.
The police report claims all six individuals gave false information while testifying in court.
Tijong’s wife says one child was examined by a doctor who found no signs of trauma, but just a few weeks later different doctors claimed they found scarring. She says no proper medical exam was ever conducted.
