After being falsely accused of a terrible crime in Indonesia, a Burlington man is now helping the police to prosecute the people who tried to put him in jail. Neil Bantleman has been fighting the Indonesian justice system for more than a year. The one-time teacher at a prestigious international school in Jakarta was arrested and charged with molesting young students, but now, there is a new twist in the case.
Bantleman was back in court, this time as a witness rather than a suspect. Indonesia’s national police force is now investigating those false allegations although the suspects in the case, may never face trial. But the current investigation may actually help Neil to leave the country, by providing proof to the Indonesian people that he and his co-accused did not just bribe their way out of trouble.
Ironically, while the Indonesian police may help secure his freedom, Neil’s brother Guy says the family has received no help from the federal government. But with or without an expression of support from Canada’s government, Guy is confident that ultimately his brother will be free.
