It was a comment that was probably supposed to be kept private, and now a top NATO official is apologizing for saying that Ukraine might have to give away some of its territory to Russia if it wants peace and a membership to the alliance.

Experts say the comment that slipped out is likely pleasing Russian president Vladamir Putin, and upsetting Ukrainian forces who have been working hard to keep their land.
