The discovery of the tunnel in a heavily wooded area near the university and close to the Rexall centre, one of the Pan Am venues caused a lot of concern and generated a lot of public interest but in the end it turned out to be just two guys wanting a cool place to hang out. Police say it wasn’t a terrorist plot, or a drug den or anything criminal, the tunnel turned out to be what some are calling an elaborate attempt to build a man cave. “What it really boils down to is two guys in their twenties who had it in their mind they were going to dig a hole to hang out in and that’s what we have.”

Police say they found 2 chairs, junk food wrappers and drink containers in the hole along with a generator, tools, a rosary and a poppy. The 10 meter long, 2 meter high tunnel was found in mid January by a conservation worker in a wooded area near York University and the Rexall centre. The public became aware of its existence last week with the police asking for information from the public and on friday two tips came in.

Police describe the two men as blue collar, they say they are not associated in any way with the university, nor were they engineers. Experts say the tunnel would have taken weeks to build and cost thousands of dollars.”They were on a mission, there was more to it, I mean its going down 3 meters or whatever it was I mean that was not an easy task.”

Police say there will be no charges laid because it’s not illegal to dig a hole, although Toronto’s bylaw department is looking into whether they’re liable for a ticket or a fine. police will not be releasing the names because no charges were laid.
