A group of residents in Burlington launched an online site today called My Community Matters. The website allows people to post what they need while donors and groups can choose who they want to help.
When Burlington residents awoke this morning, public places were covered with a thousand cards, each holding a toonie coin donated by Dan Lawrie Insurance. The spirit of the campaign is to take a toonie if you need it or pass it forward to someone who does.
It’s part of today’s launch of My Community Matters, a online site that connects donors with community members who are in need. Organizer Jane McKenna gives an example: “I got a call the other day that a woman needed her son to have glasses. She was just not capable of getting him the glasses that she needed. This is an opportunity for her to go online and for people to give five or ten dollars for her son to have the glasses that he needs.”
“Whether it’s your son needs a new snowsuit, you might not be able to get boots this year, maybe your daughter needs her teeth fixed. Whatever it is that you need at that time to help the people in our community.”
“Life is short and life is about giving back. If you don’t do something good, then what’s the point of being here?”
