As Marco Muzzo got up to speak, there was a noticeable sound in the courtroom.

It was the footsteps of Jennifer Neville-Lake and husband Edward Lake walking out. They would not hear what the man who is responsible for killing their three kids and one parent had to say.

Muzzo’s voice was shakey as he fought back tears.

“I am tortured by the grief I have caused,” he said.

His statement lasted only a few moments.  The 29 year old made a point of saying the names of the three children; 9 year old Daniel,  5 year old Harrison, and 2 year old Milly, along with their grandfather, 65 year old Gary Neville who were killed in the collision on September 29th.

“I will spend the rest of my life … educating the public on the dangers of drinking and driving,” Muzzo said.

As Muzzo returned to his seat, the Neville-Lakes returned to theirs.

Earlier the Crown called Muzzo’s decision to drive with a blood alcohol content that was three times the legal limit as “an act of extreme selfishness.”

The crown asked for a sentence between 10 and 12 years.  If that is accepted, it would be the harshest sentence for a first time DUI.

Muzzo’s lawyer, Brian Greenspan read parts of 92 letters of support from friends and family of Muzzo. He described a humble and polite man who will accept his sentence.

Justice Michelle Fuerst is expected to take three weeks to make her decision.
