Tania Cowell was a personal support worker on maternity leave with a 5 month old baby when she was stabbed to death 2 years ago. Today, the father of her child went on trial for her murder.

Haiden Suarez Noa, now in his late 30s, moved here from Cuba in 2009 and met Tania Cowell on the dating site Plenty of Fish a couple of years before she was killed.

It’s a strange case, in that he had no criminal record, and no one seemed to know anything was wrong in the relationship he had with Tania Cowell. It seemed like they had a great relationship. But this is just the first day, and so far we have only heard the beginning of the prosecution evidence.

An officer testified that Noa walked into a Guelph police station on March 10, 2013, carrying a baby seat. Noa told him he was turning himself in, and wanted his baby taken care of.

Noa said “I killed my girlfriend. I murdered her.” He told the officer it had happened the night before, at their apartment in Stoney Creek.

From the prisoner box, Noa sighed deeply as the officer remembered him saying “I’m not joking. This is not a joke. She is dead.”

Later he told police “I just lost it. I stabbed her. She tried to come at me.”

Tania Cowell’s body was found that day. She had been stabbed with a kitchen knife; 10 times in her chest and neck, and once in the back.

He has pleaded not guilty to second degree murder.
