The boss of the Niagara Detention Centre took the witness stand for the 4th straight day at the second degree murder trail of Jeremy Hall. Hall is accused of playing a key role in the hanging death of fellow jail inmate Kelvin Sawa.
Sergeant Brooke Storm was taken through surveillance video from August 15, 2011, the day Kelvin Sawa was found hanging in his cell, second by second, frame by frame, she was asked by defence counsel Stephanie Di Guiseppe which inmates were seen on the tape.
The inmates had heard Kelvin Sawa was accused of sexually assaulting a young teenager, Jeremy Hall is accused of using threats that resulted in Sawa hanging himself. Hall’s defence team concedes he’d earlier beaten Sawa in the washroom.
Di Guiseppe suggested Hall was in the TV room for 16 minutes with the door closed while the video shows other inmates spitting at Sawa and throwing things at him.
Sergeant Storm says its detention centre policy to keep charges and convictions secret for inmate protection. She testified inmates are desensitized to violence happening around them, they keep their heads down doing their own time. Starting tomorrow other inmates in the maximum security wing will give their version of events the day Kelvin Sawa hanged himself.
