Murder charges in Danzig shooting

Toronto police have laid murder charges after a deadly mass shooting during a BBQ this summer on Danzig Street in Scarborough.

Shaquan Mesquito, 18, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after the shooting that killed two people and injured more than 20 others. He has also been charged with attempted murder, 24 counts of aggravated assault and one count of reckless discharge of a firearm. Police had previously charged him with making threats before the shooting; he was already in custody.

Shyanne Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 23, were killed when they were caught in the crossfire of the shootout on July 16th.

Police believe the shooting began after one member of a gang known as the Malvern Crew wasn’t allowed in to the BBQ because of a rival gang known as the Galloway Boys. Police say the Galloway Boys have been linked to at least five other shootings in the past year.

Although murder charges have been laid, police say their investigation isn’t over.
