Hamilton Fire responded to a report of a structure fire in Hamilton on Monday.

Firefighters were called to 319 Barton Street East between East Avenue and Emerald Street at around 3:21 p.m. on April 18.

Crews were informed before arrival that someone may have still been inside the building. When firefighters arrived on scene, they say there was heavy smoke coming from the second storey window of a two and a half storey residential building.

Firefighters immediately entered the building and made their way to the second floor and found that the occupant had been able to self evacuate.

Hamilton Fire says the blaze was quickly brought under control. It had caused significant damage to one of the apartments on the second floor, while other areas of the building sustained both smoke and water damage.

One person was treated on the scene by Hamilton Paramedics and transported to hospital. No other injuries have been reported.

Hamilton Fire says the cause of the fire and damage estimate has not yet been determined.
