Multiple alarm fire in Stoney Creek causes over $1M in damage

A fire at a townhouse in Stoney Creek overnight caused significant damage with a total estimate exceeding one million dollars.
The Hamilton Fire Department received a call at approximately 12:15 a.m. Monday for a residential fire at 174 Highbury Dr., between Holyoake Dr. and Gatestone Dr.
Crews reported a well involved and advanced fire upon arrival. The fire was centralized to unit number 15 in the row of townhomes.
Hamilton Fire Chief, Dave Cunliffe said crews initiating aggressive firefighting operations on the ground floor reported heavy fire and extreme heat.
“The fire consumed the main floor of unit 15 as well as caused significant damage to the second floor, including structural damage to the floor,” Chief Cunliffe said.
The alarm was upgraded once crews arrived on scene to ensure additional resources were dispatched from across the city to battle the blaze.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to unit 15 and have the situation under control shortly.
While the fire was stopped before it directly extended into the adjacent units 14 and 16, both units were subject to some damage to the exterior at the rear as well as some smoke damage.
It is estimated that the total damage amount will be in excess of $1 million dollars.
At this time no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.
