Multiple-alarm fire in central Hamilton apartment, 1 person in hospital

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries following a multiple-alarm fire at a central Hamilton apartment building early Wednesday morning.

Emergency services received a call around 3 a.m. from a resident, who was trapped in their unit on the 18th floor, at 140 Robinson St., between Bay and Caroline streets.

Crews were met with heavy smoke and quickly knocked down the fire inside the apartment to remove the occupant to safety. The structure fire caused over $100,000 in damages.

A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In a release, Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said neighbouring residents were allowed back into the building after fire crews removed smoke that migrated to a number of floors.

No other injuries have been reported.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified and Hamilton police say they believe the fire is suspicious.
