At the same time that Stephen Harper was speaking at the Chambers of Commerce roundtable in Welland, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair was in Niagara Falls talking about his plan to create jobs in the auto sector. As Lauran Sabourin reports, with both leaders in such close proximity, neither missed the chance to take shots at the other.

Touring automotive logisitics company Spencer ARL, NDP leader Tom Mulcair promised to offer millions in financial incentives to auto assembly and parts plants. He says such incentives would create more jobs.
“Clearly, Mr. Harper’s got his foot on the brake when we should be in the fast lane. We need to do better.”

While Mulcair was in Niagara Falls taking swipes at Stephen Harper, Harper was taking the stage at the Canadian Tire Financial services building in Welland. Mulcair has been to Niagara Region three times since the campaign began. In the last 24 hours Stephen Harper made stops in two Niagara ridings.

“It’s clear that Ontario has become a battleground state. Within Ontario – Southern Ontario, we’re going to see a lot of leaders here over the next six weeks” says DeGroote School of Business professor Marvin Ryder.

It’s an area that’s lost thousands of manufacturing jobs over the past 15 years. In Welland alone there are acres and acres of empty industrial land.

Harper reiterated his plan to kick start the economy by keeping taxes low. “But i will tell you right now, looking at Ontario, if we get a high tax Liberal or NDP government federally, that will be an absolute disaster for this country.”
