Mother and her 2-year-old toddler escape house fire in Hamilton

A mother and her two-year-old son are safe after a fire broke out at a townhome in Hamilton Friday morning.
The Hamilton Fire Department received multiple calls about a structure fire at 525 Stone Church Rd. East around 8:36 a.m.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and a well-involved fire on the first floor of the middle unit townhouse.
A mother inside the home managed to grab her two-year-old son and carry him out of the house before firefighters arrived on scene.

The fire was upgraded to a multiple alarm and additional units were called in to assist.
Firefighters went inside and were able to quickly get the blaze under control.
Hamilton fire officials say the fire did not spread to neighbouring homes.
The unit sustained significant fire and smoke damage.
Crews continue to put out hotspots at the scene.
Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen area of the home.
