Mistress America is a comedy written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig and directed by Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). It is the second collaboration between Baumbach and Gerwig after 2012’s Frances Ha. Gerwig stars alongside Lola Kirke, Matthew Shear, Jasmine Cephas-Jones, Heather Lind.
In MISTRESS AMERICA, Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig) – a resident of Times Square and adventurous gal about town – she is rescued from her disappointment and seduced by Brooke’s alluringly mad schemes.
Gerwig’s character, Brooke, was originally intended to be a smaller role in another story, but in time Baumbach realized that she was the character they should be writing about. “As we wrote, Greta would speak in Brooke’s voice and it made us both laugh. We decided she deserved her own movie and started writing what became Mistress America. We began with Brooke and reverse-engineered the story from there. I have no idea what the inspiration was for Brooke, but once Greta started talking like her, I knew I’d like to see a movie with her playing this part.”
Mistress America is rated 14A.
