Milton Mayor Gord Krantz has become the longest serving mayor in Canada

Milton’s mayor Gordon Krantz hit a milestone today in the political field. He became Canada’s longest serving mayor surpassing Mississauga’s former mayor, Hazel McCallion.

His lawn was decorated with flags, his employees threw him a surprise party and Mayor Krantz took it all in.

“It truly was a surprise and of course, I’m well aware that it’s a milestone.”

Long-time business owners like Tony Graci get regular visits from the mayor.

“I’ve been cutting Gord’s hair for over 50 years.”

He’s gotten to know the mayor over the years.

‘He’s very good with everybody and there’s been a lot of changes in Milton and the town growing. He’s one of the best mayors I ever remember.”

And he’s not alone.

“He’s pretty awesome. We’ve known him for years. We’re pretty proud of him.”

“He’s always been a great influence on showing support for all kinds of different things in town including small businesses like ourselves.”

Mayor Krantz has lived in Milton his whole life and he has an impressive resume starting out as a firefighter and now the longest serving mayor in Canada. He’s seen the town grow from 5000 to over 130 000 and he has no plans of stopping anytime soon.

“I say, stay tuned. You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

Since he took office in 1980 older homes have been replaced by sprawling neighbourhoods. The population has more than tripled in the last 15 years and the economy continues to grow and evolve.

“I’ve been part of many changes in this community and I would like to think the majority of those have been for the better.”

And what does he love most about his job?

“The people.”

Krantz is a small town guy at heart, and if he had to make a decision today on whether or not he would run for re-election, he probably would.

Luckily though, he won’t have to make that decision for a couple years.
