The Toronto Maple Leafs have won the bidding war for Mike Babcock.

The Leafs announced today that Babcock will be the team’s new head coach. Babcock has spent the last 10 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

His contract expires at the end of june, but the Red Wings had given him permission to negotiate with other teams. The Leafs reportedly beat out several clubs, including Detroit, Buffalo and San Jose.

Babcock led Canada to two Olympic gold medals and won a Stanley Cup in 2008 with the Red Wings.

The Leafs will introduce him during a news conference Thursday.
