The City of Hamilton took part in a project that is the first of its kind across the country. The project called “A Point in Time” aimed at collecting data about the city’s homeless.

About 300 volunteers took to the streets over the past two days, talking to the homeless. Hamilton is among 30 Canadian cities conducting a survey in an effort to measure homelessness on a national scale.

The count builds on the 20,000 homes campaign, a national movement with a goal of housing 20 000 homeless by July first, 2018.

Last year the city surveyed nearly 500 homeless people in Hamilton, focusing primarly on the downtown core. This year, volunteers were split into groups, some given city streets to roam, while others surveyed the people using meal programs.

Once the survey is complete the city says the collected data will help them better cater theirs services those in need.
