McMaster University is letting students and the community know they are being “very cautious” while a student who self-isolated earlier this week as they are being tested for COVID-19.

McMaster has released an updated statement informing that the student was on campus once last week before going into self-isolation. They visited the Burke Science Building on February 25th.

The student had traveled to Italy during the school’s reading week between February 17th to February 23rd.

The school does not know when the test results will be in but they anticipate it coming early in the week.

“We are a community and we think now is the time for an abundance of caution,” said Roger Couldrey, McMaster’s vice-president Administration in the statement. “We believe this is what our students, their parents and our employees would want us to do.”

While health officials have said that regular cleaning should suffice, as a precaution, McMaster is undertaking extra cleaning on level one and all public spaces.

McMaster says if the student does test positive for the virus, public health officials will be responsible for contacting those who need additional information or other follow up that may need to occur.
