McMaster University has announced the appointment of its ninth president and vice-chancellor.

Doctor Susan Tighe has been named to the position and will start her new role in July of next year.

She has been McMaster’s provost and vice-president (Academic) since 2020 and previously served as the deputy provost and associate vice-president ‘Integrated Planning and Budgeting’ at the University of Waterloo.

Doctor Tighe is also an award-winning engineer and researcher specializing in the development, design and management of sustainable concrete and asphalt for airports, roads and other critical infrastructure.

“I am excited about our upcoming fundraising campaign,” says Dr. Tighe. “We must also continue to build McMaster’s profile and reputation, and ensure that industry, government, alumni and donors know how the university can continue to help make our city, province and country stronger.”

McMaster began an international search for a new president earlier this year after current president David Farrar announced he was stepping down to return to his roots as a researcher.

Doctor Tighe received a unanimous vote by the hiring committee.
