McMaster to join universities across the county in honouring Iran plane crash victims

McMaster University will join universities across the county in a minute of silence to remember and honour the victims of last week’s devastating plane crash in Iran.

Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran’s main airport on Jan. 8, killing all 176 passengers on board.

The victims included 57 Canadians, many of whom were students, faculty, staff members and alumni at universities across the country.

Two McMaster PhD students Iman Aghabali and Mehdi Eshaghian and former postdoctoral fellow Siavash Maghsoudlou were killed on the flight.

The school will hold an informal gathering in the lobby of the John Hodgins Engineering building before the moment of silence, beginning at 12:45 p.m.

Today at 1 p.m. McMaster joins universities across the country in a minute of silence honouring all those who died in the Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 crash in Iran last week.

“We hope people participate in the minute of silence in whatever way they choose,” said President David Farrar in a news release. “Whether it is a moment of individual silence or a time for people to come together, every person will decide how best they want to mark the moment as a sign of solidarity and support.”

Brock University will also hold a moment of silence and a brief ceremony in the Rankin Family Pavilion starting at 1 p.m.
