The federal government announced a $392 million investment in health science this morning. Of that, $19 million is designated for health research at McMaster University.

One of the beneficiaries of today’s announcement is a lab researching the correlation between Type 2 Diabetes and obesity, and is working on treatment options for those living with Type 2 Diabetes, including a drug that would be taken either daily or by-weekly, to ramp up metabolism. The research is headed by Dr. Greg Steinberg.

Several other labs at McMaster will also be getting a boost from this funding, including one that explores the impact of using e-cigarettes during pregnancy.

Researchers at McMaster say the new money will not only help in the short-term, but will help train the next generation of medical researchers. And according to Federal MP Filomena Tassi, that’s exactly what the government hopes the money will do.
